120. Do one small thing

Do one small thing.

It was wildly appropriate that I published this post hastily, last week, without doing one small thing, like slowing down.

While in 8th grade, I lived in Dallas, TX. My parents wanted me to go to one of the private all-girls schools across town. I took the placement exam at both girls' schools (Ursuline & Hockaday). Hockaday denied my entrance as they said I didn't look over my exam but rather rushed through it and spent the remainder of the time filling the margins of my paper with doodles and my practice autograph. I flipped through every page and made sure it was decorated after rushing through the exam. Alas, thank you Ursuline Academy for letting me in and allowing my cherry red Volkswagen Vanagan on your property.

As I continue my work as a School Counselor and Therapist, I continue to be amazed by the similarities in the human condition. My conclusion thus far is that we are all healing from what life has dealt us and that change starts by doing one small thing.

On a recent bender of a walk with a dear friend, her one small thing was starting to floss her teeth every day. In countless conversations with humans, I have prescribed the simplest of changes:

  • Shower in the morning. Every single morning. Even if you don't need to.

  • Write your favorite word or prayer on the top of every page in your notebook. Every page.

  • Go to sleep at the same time. Every single night.

  • Drink a big glass of water. Every single morning.

  • Pick up your phone and look at it one time every hour. No more.

Do one small thing, friend. It will likely change your life.
